Paget's disease is a chronic condition of bone characterized by disorder of the normal bone remodeling process. Normal bone has a balance of forces that act to lay down new bone and take up old bone. This relationship (referred to as "bone remodeling") is essential for maintaining the normal calcium levels in our blood. In bone affected by Paget's disease, the bone remodeling is disturbed and not synchronized. As a result, the bone that is formed is abnormal, enlarged, not as dense, brittle, and prone to breakage (fracture).
Paget's disease affects older skeletal bone of adults. It's estimated that 1% of adults in the U.S. have Paget's disease. There is also an extremely rare form of Paget's disease in children, referred to as juvenile Paget's disease. Paget's disease is also known as osteitis deformans.

Actonel (risedronate sodium) is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in men and women, and is also used to treat Paget's disease of bone. It is a bisphosphonate. This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include upset stomach or headache.
Dosage of Actonel depends on the condition being treated. Actonel may interact with antacids, supplements, or medicines that contain aluminum, calcium, magnesium. Other minerals can interfere with how your body absorbs this drug. It may also interact with aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Caution is advised if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the future. This medication may stay in your body for many years. Its effects on a fetus are not known. Consult your doctor. It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Actonel (risedronate sodium) is indicated for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. In postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, Actonel (risedronate sodium) reduces the incidence of vertebral fractures and a composite endpoint of nonvertebral osteoporosis-related fractures [see Clinical Studies].
