Introduction to deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

Arteries have thin muscles within their walls to be able to withstand the pressure of the heart pumping blood to the far reaches of the body. Veins don't have a significant muscle lining, and there is nothing pumping blood back to the heart except physiology. Blood returns to the heart because the body's large muscles squeeze the veins as they contract in their normal activity of moving the body. The normal activities of moving the body returns the blood back to the heart.

There are two types of veins in the leg; superficial veins and deep veins. Superficial veins lie just below the skin and are easily seen on the surface. Deep veins, as their name implies, are located deep within the muscles of the leg. Blood flows from the superficial veins into the deep venous system through small perforator veins. SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, diarrhea, weakness, nausea, and dizziness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

To avoid dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: unusual bleeding/bruising, black stools, swelling of the ankles/feet, rapid/difficult breathing, fainting, stomach/abdominal pain, unusual tiredness, change in the amount of urine, pink/bloody urine, vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: chest/jaw/left arm pain, confusion/mental changes, fast/irregular/pounding heartbeat, slurred speech, vision changes, weakness on one side of the body.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

PRECAUTIONS: Before taking anagrelide, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: severe liver disease.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: heart problems (e.g., heart attack, heart failure, irregular heartbeat), lung problems, kidney problems, liver problems.

This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcoholic beverages.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication.

This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy because of possible harm to the unborn baby. Discuss the risk and benefits with your doctor. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Consult your doctor for more details and to discuss reliable forms of birth control.

This drug may pass into breast milk and could have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
