What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a disease of the major nerve of vision, called the optic nerve. The optic nerve receives light-generated nerve impulses from the retina and transmits these to the brain, where we recognize those electrical signals as vision. Glaucoma is characterized by a particular pattern of progressive damage to the optic nerve that generally begins with a subtle loss of side vision (peripheral vision). If glaucoma is not diagnosed and treated, it can progress to loss of central vision and blindness.
Glaucoma is usually, but not always, associated with elevated pressure in the eye (intraocular pressure). Generally, it is this elevated eye pressure that leads to damage of the eye (optic) nerve. In some cases, glaucoma may occur in the presence of normal eye pressure. This form of glaucoma is believed to be caused by poor regulation of blood flow to the optic nerve.

Alphagan P (brimonidine tartrate) Ophthalmic Solution is used to treat open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension (high pressure inside the eye). It is an antiglaucoma medication. Some strengths of this medication are available in generic form. Common side effects include eye discomfort/itching/redness, blurred vision, dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness, or tiredness.
The recommended dose of Alphagan P is one drop in the affected eye(s) three times daily, approximately 8 hours apart. It may be used concomitantly with other topical ophthalmic drug products to lower intraocular pressure. If more than one topical ophthalmic product is to be used, the different products should be instilled at least 5 minutes apart. Alphagan P may interact with blood pressure medications, digoxin, beta-blockers, or antidepressants. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. Alphagan P should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Alphagan-P Consumer Information: Uses
This medication is used to treat open-angle glaucoma or high fluid pressure in the eye. Lowering high fluid pressure in the eye reduces the risk of vision loss, nerve damage, or blindness. This medication lowers pressure by allowing better fluid drainage from within the eye and also by reducing the amount of fluid formed in the eye. It is known as an alpha agonist.
This drug is not recommended for use in children less than 2 years of age due to an increased risk of serious side effects such as very slowed breathing. Ask the doctor or pharmacist for details.
