What is anemia?

Anemia is a medical condition in which the red blood cell count or hemoglobin is less than normal. The normal level of hemoglobin is generally different in males and females. For men, anemia is typically defined as hemoglobin level of less than 13.5 gram/100 ml and in women as hemoglobin of less than 12.0 gram/100 ml. These definitions may vary slightly depending on the source and the laboratory reference used.

What causes anemia?

Any process that can disrupt the normal life span of a red blood cell may cause anemia. Normal life span of a red blood cell is typically around 120 days. Red blood cells are made in the bone marrow.

Anemia is caused essentially through two basic pathways. Anemia is caused by either:

  1. a decrease in production of red blood cells or hemoglobin, or
  2. an increase in loss or destruction of red blood cells.

Anadrol-50 (oxymetholone) is used to treat certain types of anemia (lack of red blood cells), including aplastic anemia, myelofibrosis, or hypoplastic anemia caused by chemotherapy. It is an anabolic steroid. This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include diarrhea, excitation, or trouble sleeping. Women taking Anadrol-50 may develop male characteristics, which could be irreversible if treatment is continued. Tell your doctor if you notice increased acne, changes in menstrual periods, a deepened voice, male pattern baldness or hair growth, an enlarged clitoris, or changes in your sex drive.

The recommended daily dose of Anadrol-50 in children and adults is 1-5 mg/kg body weight per day. The usual effective dose is 1-2 mg/kg/day but higher doses may be required, and the dose is individualized. Response is not often immediate, and three to six months should be given. Anadrol-50 may interact with blood thinners or oral insulin or diabetes medication. There may be other drugs that can interact with Anadrol-50. Tell your doctor about all your prescription and over-the-counter medications and supplements you are taking. Anadrol-50 must not be used during pregnancy due to the risk of harm to a fetus. It is recommended that women of childbearing age use birth control while taking this drug. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Due to the potential harm to a nursing infant, breast-feeding is not recommended.

ANADROL Tablets is indicated in the treatment of anemias caused by deficient red cell production. Acquired aplastic anemia, congenital aplastic anemia, myelofibrosis and the hypoplastic anemias due to the administration of myelotoxic drugs often respond.

ANADROL Tablets should not replace other supportive measures such as transfusion, correction of iron, folic acid, vitamin B12 or pyridoxine deficiency, antibacterial therapy and the appropriate use of corticosteroids.

Anadrol-50 Consumer Information: Uses

This medication is a synthetic male hormone (androgen or anabolic steroid) used to treat a low red blood cell count (anemia). It works by increasing the amount of the hormone (erythropoietin) involved in the production of red blood cells.

Due to the risk of serious, possibly life-threatening side effects, this medication must not be used to improve athletic performance or physical appearance. Oxymetholone does not enhance athletic ability. When used as directed under medical supervision, the risks are minimal.
