What are canker sores?

Canker sores are small ulcer craters in the lining of the mouth that are frequently painful and sensitive. Canker sores are very common. About 20% of the population (one out of five people) have canker sores at any one time. Canker sores are also medically known as aphthous ulcers or aphthous stomatitis.

Women are slightly more likely than men to have recurrent canker sores. It can occur at any age, but it is more commonly seen in teenagers. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using amlexanox and call your doctor if you have any of these serious side effects:

  • skin rash;
  • new mouth ulcers; or
  • white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips.

Less serious side effects may include may a slight stinging or burning when you first apply the medication.

Aphthasol Consumer Information: Uses

This medication is used to treat mouth (canker) sores. Canker sores usually heal on their own after 7 to 10 days. This medication helps the sore heal faster so that you can eat/speak more comfortably.

HOW TO USE: Use this medication in the mouth only. Use it as soon as you notice a canker sore forming, usually 4 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Use this medication until the sore heals.
