High blood pressure facts

  • High blood pressure (hypertension) is designated as either essential (primary) hypertension or secondary hypertension and is defined as a consistently elevated blood pressure exceeding 140/90 mm Hg.

Apresoline Drug Center

Medical Editor: Melissa Conrad Stöppler, MD

Apresoline (hydralazine hydrochloride) is indicated for treatment of hypertension by relaxing vascular smooth muscle. Some common side effects reported with the administration of Apresoline Hydrochloride are headache, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Apresoline is administered orally in the form of tablets. Concurrent use of Apresoline with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants should be avoided because additional reductions in alertness and additional impairment of central nervous system performance may occur. In a few patients Apresoline may produce a clinical picture simulating systemic lupus erythematosus including glomerulonephritis. In such patients Apresoline should be discontinued unless the benefit-to-risk determination requires continued antihypertensive therapy with this drug. MAO inhibitors should be used with caution in patients receiving Apresoline. Apresoline should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.

Our Apresoline Drug Center provides a comprehensive view of available drug information as well as related drugs, user reviews, supplements, and diseases and conditions.
