The initial treatment of choice for hyperlipidemia is dietary therapy specific for the type of hyperlipidemia. ¹

Excess body weight and alcoholic intake may be important factors in hypertriglyceridemia and should be addressed prior to any drug therapy. Physical exercise can be an important ancillary measure. Estrogen therapy, some beta-blockers, and thiazide diuretics may also be associated with increases in plasma triglycerides.
