- High blood pressure (hypertension) is designated as either essential (primary) hypertension or secondary hypertension and is defined as a consistently elevated blood pressure exceeding 140/90 mm Hg.

Avapro (irbesartan) is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is sometimes given together with other blood pressure medications. It is also used to treat kidney problems caused by type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. Avapro is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. This medication may be available in generic form. Common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, or upset stomach as your body adjusts to the medication.
To treat hypertension the recommended starting dose of Avapro is 150 mg once daily. Patients requiring further reduction in blood pressure should be adjusted to 300 mg once daily. To treat nephropathy in type 2 diabetic patients, the recommended target maintenance dose is 300 mg once daily. Avapro may interact with diuretics (water pills), digoxin, or blood thinners. Tell your doctor all medications you use. Avapro is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the risk for harm to the fetus. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

AVAPRO (irbesartan) is indicated for the treatment of hypertension. It may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
Nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetic Patients
AVAPRO is indicated for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy with an elevated serum creatinine and proteinuria ( > 300 mg/day) in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Avapro Consumer Information: Uses
Irbesartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes.
