What are birth control pills and how do they work?

Birth control pills are also known as oral contraceptives (OCs) or, simply, “the pill.” They offer protection against pregnancy by blocking the union of sperm and egg, thereby preventing conception.

Oral contraceptives or birth control pills contain synthetic female hormones. They work largely by preventing the release of an egg from an ovary, or ovulation. If no egg is released, there can be no pregnancy.

Stopping ovulation is not the only way birth control pills can work. The progestin or synthetic progesterone in birth control pills also changes the physical and chemical environment of the female reproductive tract, making it hostile for sperm.

Aviane in Detail with Side Effects

Aviane (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) is used as contraception to prevent pregnancy. Aviane is in the contraceptive drug class and is a combination of female hormones. This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, stomach cramping/bloating, dizziness, vaginal discomfort/irritation, increased vaginal fluids, or breast tenderness/enlargement. Acne may improve or worsen. Vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting) or missed/irregular periods may occur, especially during the first few months of use.

Aviane comes in a pack of 28 tablets. Take one orange active table daily for 21 consecutive days, followed by one light-green inert tablet for 7 consecutive days, according to the prescribed schedule. Aviane may interact with acetaminophen, prednisolone, theophylline, cyclosporine, St. John's wort, antibiotics, seizure medications, barbiturate sedatives, or HIV or AIDS medications. Tell your doctor all medicines you are taking. Aviane must not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your doctor. Aviane passes into breast milk. This may affect milk production and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Oral contraceptives are indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use this product as a method of contraception.

Oral contraceptives are highly effective. Table II lists the typical accidental pregnancy rates for users of combination oral contraceptives and other methods of contraception. The efficacy of these contraceptive methods, except sterilization, the IUD, and Norplant^® System, depends upon the reliability with which they are used. Correct and consistent use of methods can result in lower failure rates.
