Avinza Drug Center

Avinza (morphine sulfate) is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Short-acting morphine is taken as needed for pain. Extended-release morphine is for use when around-the-clock pain relief is needed. It is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, or drowsiness.

The dose of Avinza is individualized for each patient, depending on the patient's medical condition and other factors. Avinza may interact with MAO inhibitors, other narcotic pain medications, sedatives, tranquilizers, muscle relaxers, alcohol, other medicines that can make you sleepy or slow your breathing, pentazocine, nalbuphine, butorphanol, or buprenorphine. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. During pregnancy, Avinza should be used only when prescribed. Using it near the expected delivery date is not recommended because of the potential for harm to a fetus. Babies born to mothers who have used this medication for an extended time may have withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, abnormal/persistent crying, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms in your newborn, tell the doctor. This drug passes into breast milk and may rarely have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Tell the doctor if your baby develops unusual sleepiness, difficulty feeding, or trouble breathing. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Do not stop taking Avinza (morphine) suddenly, or you could have withdrawal symptoms.
