Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common ailments of the bowel (intestines) and affects an estimated 15% of people in the US. The term, irritable bowel, is not a particularly accurate one since it implies that the bowel is responding irritably to normal stimuli, and this may or may not be the case. The several terms used for IBS, including spastic colon, spastic colitis, and mucous colitis, attest to the difficulty of getting a descriptive handle on the ailment. Moreover, each of the other names is itself as problematic as the term IBS.

Bentyl (dicyclomine) is a medication that belongs to the drug class called anticholinergics. Bentyl is available as a generic drug, and is prescribed for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Common side effects of Bentyl include dry mouth, blurred vision, confusion, agitation, increased heart rate, constipation, difficulty urinating, headache, nervousness, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, flushing, nausea, vomiting, rash, and bloating.
The usual doses of Bentyl range from from 20 - 40 mg given 4 times daily. Drug interactions include Benadryl (diphenhydramine), Tavist (clemastine), Phenergan (promethazine), Mellaril (thioridazine), Elavil, Endep (amitriptyline), Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) and Norpace (disopyramide). Bentyl has not been adequately studied in pregnant women and it is excreted in breast milk therefore, it should not be used in nursing mothers.
