What is schistosomiasis?

Schistosomiasis is a disease that is caused by parasites (genus Schistosoma) that enter humans by attaching to the skin, penetrating it, and then migrating through the venous system to the portal veins where the parasites produce eggs and eventually, the symptoms of acute or chronic disease (for example, fever, abdominal discomfort, blood in stools). This disease is also known as bilharziasis, bilharzia, bilharziosis, and snail fever or, in the acute form, Katayama fever. Theodore Bilharz identified the parasite Schistosoma hematobium in Egypt in 1851. Schistosomiasis is the second most prevalent tropical disease in the world; malaria is the first. The disease is found mainly in developing countries in Africa, Asia, South America, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. Biltricide Patient Information including How Should I Take

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking praziquantel (Biltricide)?

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to praziquantel, or if you are also taking rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate).

If you have any of these other conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take this medication:

kidney disease;
heart disease; or
liver disease.

FDA pregnancy category B. Praziquantel is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

Praziquantel can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Do not give this medication to a child younger than 4 years old.

How should I take praziquantel (Biltricide)?

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Take this medication with a full glass (8 ounces) of water.

Praziquantel is usually taken 3 times in one day. Your doses should be taken 4 to 6 hours apart on that day.

Praziquantel should be taken with a meal.

You may need to break a praziquantel tablet in order to get the correct dose. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Do not crush or chew the praziquantel tablet or portion of a tablet. Swallow the pill whole.

Store praziquantel at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
