What is infertility?

Infertility means not being able to get pregnant after one year of trying. Or, six months, if a woman is 35 or older. Women who can get pregnant but are unable to stay pregnant may also be infertile.

Pregnancy is the result of a process that has many steps. To get pregnant:

  • A woman must release an egg from one of her ovaries (ovulation).

  • The egg must go through a Fallopian tube toward the uterus (womb).

  • A man's sperm must join with (fertilize) the egg along the way.

  • The fertilized egg must attach to the inside of the uterus (implantation).

Infertility can happen if there are problems with any of these steps.

Approximately 3.5 % of female patients treated with cetrorelix have developed ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Symptoms of OHSS include severe pelvic pain, swelling of the hands or legs, abdominal pain and swelling, shortness of breath, weight gain, low urine output, diarrhea, and nausea or vomiting. Cetrotide Consumer Information: Uses

Cetrorelix is used in women having certain fertility treatments (controlled ovarian stimulation). This medication prevents eggs from being released too early (premature ovulation) by blocking the hormone (gonadotropin-releasing hormone-GnRH) that causes eggs to be released from the ovaries. This gives the eggs time to develop properly.

This medication is usually used with another hormone (human chorionic gonadotropin-hCG) to help you become pregnant. HCG is used to cause the growth and release of a mature egg (ovulation).
