Allergy medications overview

The arsenal of allergy drugs includes dozens of medications that relieve allergy symptoms when confronted with a trigger known as an allergen. That trigger could be something from a plant, such as pollen, or something from an animal (pet dander, dust mites, cockroaches). Other allergy triggers include certain fragrances or chemical substances.

DRUG DESCRIPTION

Crolom® (cromolyn sodium ophthalmic solution USP, 4%) is a clear, colorless, sterile solution for topical ophthalmic use. Cromolyn sodium is represented by the following structural formula:

Chemical Name: Disodium 5,5'- [(2-hydroxytrimethylene)dioxy]bis[4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran-2-carboxylate]

Pharmacologic Category: Mast cell stabilizer.

EACH mL CONTAINS: ACTIVE: Cromolyn Sodium 40 mg (4%); INACTIVES: Edetate Disodium 0.1% and Purified Water.

Hydrochloric Acid and/or Sodium Hydroxide may be added to adjust pH (4.0 - 7.0). PRESERVATIVE ADDED: Benzalkonium Chloride 0.01%.

What are the possible side effects of cromolyn sodium ophthalmic (Crolom, Opticrom)?

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using this medication and call your doctor if you have severe burning, stinging, or irritation in your eyes after using the eye drops.

Less serious side effects may include:

mild burning or stinging after you use the eye drops;
dry or irritated eyes;
puffy eyes; or
watery eyes.

What are the precautions when taking cromolyn ophthalmic (Crolom)?

Before using cromolyn, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients (such as preservatives like benzalkonium chloride), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: contact lens use.

After you apply this drug, your vision may become temporarily blurred. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
