Effexor (venlafaxine) is used for treatment of major depression. A generic version of Effexor is available. Effexor side effects can cause nausea, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, drowsiness, and loss of appetite. Increased blood pressure can occur and seizures have been reported. Abrupt discontinuation of Effexor may cause dizziness, headache, nausea, changes in mood, or changes in the sense of smell, and taste.

The usual dose of Effexor is 37.5-375 mg daily. Life-threatening interactions can occur in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as Nardil (phenelzine) and Parnate (tranylcypromine). MAOIs and Effexor should not be taken together. At least 14 days should elapse between discontinuation of an MAOI and initiation Effexor. In addition, at least 7 days should elapse after stopping Effexor before starting an MAOI. It is not known if Effexor is secreted in breast milk. Administration of Effexor during the third trimester of pregnancy has been shown to adversely affect the fetus and lead to prolonged hospitalization and respiratory support.
