Effexor XR is available as a generic termed venlafaxine. Common side effects of Effexor XR are nausea, insomnia, dizziness, asthenia, somnolence, dry mouth, nervousness, and sweating.
Effexor XR contains venlafaxine hydrochloride in strengths of 37.5, 75, or 150 mg tablets. The dose is usually one tablet per day. Serious side effects of Effexor XR include clinical worsening of symptoms and suicide risk, especially in younger patients. Patients may need to be observed for changes in behavior while taking this drug. Serotonin syndrome may occur. Effexor XR may interact with different drugs such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and many other types of drugs; the list is extensive. Hyponatremia, hypertension, and exacerbation of bipolar symptoms may also occur. Effexor XR has not been adequately studied in pregnant females; risks of use must be weighed against possible benefits to the mother. Effexor has been detected in breast milk and may cause serious problems for nursing infants. Although there are reports of use of Effexor in pediatric populations, safety and effectiveness has not been established for pediatric patients.
