  • Leukemia is a cancer of the blood cells.
  • While the exact cause(s) of leukemia is not known, risk factors have been identified.

Elitek Prescribing Information: Indications & Dosage

Elitek (rasburicase) ® is indicated for the initial management of plasma uric acid levels in pediatric and adult patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumor malignancies who are receiving anti-cancer therapy expected to result in tumor lysis and subsequent elevation of plasma uric acid.

Limitation of use: Elitek (rasburicase) is indicated only for a single course of treatment [seeWARNINGS and PRECAUTIONS].

In rare cases, the use of rasburicase has been associated with blood problems (methemoglobinemia, hemolytic reactions) and serious allergic reactions. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; chest pain; shortness of breath; dizziness; hives; or bluish skin or lips. These may be symptoms of a serious reaction.

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take rasburicase and talk to your doctor if you experience:

Elitek Consumer Information: Uses

This medication is used to prevent high blood levels of uric acid from occurring in children with cancer (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma, solid malignant tumors) who are about to receive cancer chemotherapy treatment. When chemotherapy is given, cancer cells are destroyed, releasing large amounts of uric acid into the bloodstream. This medication allows uric acid to more easily be removed from the body by the kidneys.
