Overview of urinary function

The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The kidneys, a pair of purplish-brown organs, are located below the ribs toward the middle of the back. The kidneys remove water and waste from the blood in the form of urine, keeping a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood. The kidneys also produce erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates the formation of red blood cells. Narrow tubes called ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, a triangle-shaped, muscular chamber in the lower abdomen. Like a balloon, the bladder's muscular, elastic walls relax and expand to store urine and contract and flatten when urine is emptied through the urethra. The typical adult bladder can store about 1 ½ cups of urine.

Elmiron Overview

Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) it is used to treat bladder pain and discomfort caused by cystitis (bladder inflammation or irritation). It is a weak blood thinner and also works as a bladder protectant. Common side effects include diarrhea, hair loss, nausea, headache, stomach upset, or abdominal pain.

The recommended dose of Elmiron is 300 mg/day taken as one 100 mg capsule orally three times daily. Take with water 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. Elmiron may interact with aspirin, alteplase, anistreplase, clopidogrel, dipyridamole, streptokinase, ticlopidine, urokinase, or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugss). Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, Elmiron should be used only when prescribed. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Elmiron Consumer Information: Uses

This medication is used to treat pain/discomfort from a certain bladder disorder (interstitial cystitis). It may work by forming a layer on the bladder wall and protecting it from harmful/irritating substances in the urine. It is also a weak "blood thinner" and therefore may increase the risk of bruising/bleeding (e.g., bleeding from the nose/gums).
