Emcyt (estramustine phosphate sodium) is an antineoplastic agent used to treat prostate cancer. Common side effects of Emcyt include nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, upset stomach, feeling weak or tired, breast swelling or tenderness, or impotence.

The recommended daily dosage of Emcyt is 14 mg per kg of body weight taken in 3 to 4 divided doses at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Tell your doctor if you have a history of stroke or heart attack, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, migraine headaches, seizures, liver or kidney disease, or Paget's disease. Do not take Emcyt with any product that contains calcium such as milk. Emcyt may interact with antacids or vitamin and mineral supplements. Always use birth control while taking Emcyt as it may cause birth defects. This medication is not usually used in women and is unlikely to be used during pregnancy or breast-feeding.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using estramustine and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

  • chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling;
  • sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body;
  • sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;
  • chest pain, sudden cough, wheezing, rapid breathing, fast heart rate;
  • pain or swelling in one or both legs;
  • feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion;
  • swelling, rapid weight gain; or
  • easy bruising.

Less serious side effects may include:

  • nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, upset stomach;
  • feeling weak or tired;
  • breast swelling or tenderness; or
  • impotence.

SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, flushing, dry skin, headache, leg cramps, decreased sexual interest/ability, and male breast tenderness/enlargement may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: mental/mood changes (e.g., depression), swelling of hands/feet, worsening of seizures, signs of worsening diabetes control (e.g., increased thirst and urination).

This medication may infrequently cause serious problems such as heart attacks, stroke, and blood clots. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms: chest/jaw/left arm pain, sudden severe headache, weakness on one side of the body, confusion, slurred speech, sudden vision changes (e.g., double vision, loss of vision), pain/redness/swelling of legs, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, sudden dizziness/fainting.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: easy bruising/bleeding, stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, dark urine, yellowing eyes/skin.

This medication can lower the body's ability to fight an infection. Notify your doctor promptly if you develop any signs of an infection such as fever, chills, or persistent sore throat.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
