  • The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a type of virus called a retrovirus, which infects humans when it comes in contact with tissues such as those that line the vagina, anal area, mouth, or eyes, or through a break in the skin.

EMTRIVA®  (emtricitabine) Structural Formula Illustration

EMTRIVA® is indicated in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of HIV-1 infection.

Additional important information regarding the use of EMTRIVA for the treatment of HIV-1 Infection:

  • EMTRIVA should not be coadministered with ATRIPLA®, COMPLERA™, TRUVADA®, or lamivudine-containing products [See WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS].
  • In treatment-experienced patients, the use of EMTRIVA should be guided by laboratory testing and treatment history [See CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY].

Stop using emtricitabine and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction : hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Emtricitabine may cause lactic acidosis (a build-up of lactic acid in the body, which can be fatal). Lactic acidosis can start slowly and get worse over time. Get emergency medical help if you have even mild symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as:

  • muscle pain or weakness;
  • numb or cold feeling in your arms and legs;
  • trouble breathing;
  • feeling dizz...

Emtriva Consumer Information: Uses

Emtricitabine is used with other medications to help control your HIV infection, thereby improving your quality of life. It may also lower your risk of complications from HIV (such as new infections, cancers). Emtricitabine belongs to a class of drugs known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors-NRTI.

Emtricitabine is not a cure for HIV and it does not prevent the spread of HIV to others through sexual contact or blood contamination (such as sharing used needles).
