What is cancer?

Cancer is a group of many related diseases that begin in cells, the body's basic unit of life. Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells in an orderly way. They perform their functions for a while, and then they die. Sometimes, however, cells do not die. Instead, they continue to divide and create new cells that the body does not need. The extra cells form a mass of tissue, called a growth or tumor. There are two types of tumors: benign and malignant. Benign tumors are not cancer. They do not invade nearby tissue or spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumors are cancer. Their growth invades normal structures near the tumor and spreads to other parts of the body. Metastasis is the spread of cancer beyond one location in the body.

Erbitux Drug Center

Medical Editor: Charles Patrick Davis, MD, PhD

Erbitux (cetuximab), in combination with radiation therapy, is a monoclonal antibody indicated for the initial treatment of locally or regionally advanced head and neck cancer of a specific type (squamous cell carcinoma). Used alone Erbitux is also approved to treat patients with head and neck cancers that have returned in the same location or spread to other parts of the body and for head and neck cancers that have progressed following platinum-based chemotherapy. It is also used on metastatic colorectal cancers that contain epidermal growth factor receptors. The drug is not available in generic form. The most common side effects reported in patients receiving cetuximab were rash, itching (pruritus), nail changes, headache, diarrhea, and respiratory, skin, and mouth infections. Erbitux also can cause low serum magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Erbitux has been associated with serious and potentially life-threatening infusion reactions and heart attack. Patients taking Erbitux should limit their exposure to the sun.

Erbitux is supplied at a concentration of 2 mg/mL in 100 mg (50 mL) or 200 mg (100 mL), single-use vials. Erbitux IV dosage and administration should only be done by those trained in the administration of this drug. Serious side effects include a low percentage of patients that experience severe side effects of life-threatening allergic reactions and heart attacks, especially if the patient was also obtaining chemotherapy or radiotherapy. These serious reactions most often occur at the time of the first IV infusion, so infusion instructions must be carefully followed by trained personnel in an appropriate setting (hospital or special facility) . Erbitux may be passed form the mother and cause harm to the fetus. Both males and females must use contraception during Erbitux therapy, and for six months after the last dose of Erbitux. Erbitux should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit is greater than the potential risk to the fetus. Because Erbitux may be passed through breast milk, nursing is not recommended during Erbitux therapy and for two months following the last dose of Erbitux. Safety and effectiveness of Erbitux has not been determined for pediatric patients.

Erbitux Consumer Information: Uses

Cetuximab is used alone or with other anti-cancer drugs to treat colorectal cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. These patients generally cannot tolerate or have not responded to another drug called irinotecan. This medication is also used to treat head and neck cancer. Cetuximab works by slowing cancer cell growth. This action occurs when this drug binds to a specific protein (epidermal growth factor receptor-EGFR) on the cancer cells. Cetuximab is a man-made protein (monoclonal antibody).
