EtheDent Side Effects Center

Medical Editor: John P. Cunha, DO, FACOEP

EtheDent 1.1% (sodium fluoride) Dental Cream strengthens tooth enamel and is used as a medication to prevent tooth decay in people that have a low level of fluoride in their drinking water. Fluoride is also used to prevent tooth decay in people who undergo radiation of the head and/or neck, which may cause dryness of the mouth and an increased incidence of tooth decay. This medication may be available in generic form. Common side effects include stomach upset, headache, or weakness.

Adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age or older, apply a thin ribbon of EtheDent to a toothbrush and brush thoroughly once daily for two minutes, preferably at bedtime. After use, adults expectorate. For best results, do not eat, drink, or rinse for 30 minutes. Pediatric patients, age 6-16, expectorate after use and rinse mouth thoroughly. EtheDent may interact with milk, other dairy products, or calcium supplements. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Consult your doctor before taking EtheDent if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
