What is dementia?

Dementia is a syndrome characterized by:

  1. impairment in memory,

  2. impairment in another area of thinking such as the ability to organize thoughts and reason, the ability to use language, or the ability to see accurately the visual world (not because of eye disease), and

  3. these impairments are severe enough to cause a decline in the patient's usual level of functioning.

Although some kinds of memory loss are normal parts of aging, the changes due to aging are not severe enough to interfere with the level of function. Many different diseases can cause dementia, but Alzheimer's disease is by far the most common cause for dementia in the United States and in most countries in the world.

Exelon Patch (rivastigmine transdermal system) is used to treat mild to moderate dementia caused by Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. Exelon Patch is in reversible cholinesterase inhibitor drug class. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite/weight loss, diarrhea, weakness, dizziness, drowsiness, shakiness (tremors), and skin irritation at the application site.

Exelon Patch dose is one 4.6 mg patch per 24 hours. Dose may be increased after a minimum of 4 weeks if needed and if the drug is well tolerated. The patch is intended for transdermal use only, on intact skin. Some products that may interact with this drug include aspirin, NSAIDs, atropine, benztropine, methscopolamine, scopolamine, bronchodilators, glycopyrrolate, mepenzolate, bladder or urinary medications, or irritable bowel medications. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when prescribed by a doctor. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
