Floxin Otic (ofloxacin otic) is used to treat ear infections. Floxin Otic is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include mild irritation/discomfort in the ear, dizziness, headache, earache, or changes in taste.

The recommended dosage of Floxin Otic for the treatment of otitis externa is five drops (0.25 mL, 0.75 mg ofloxacin) instilled into the affected ear twice daily for 10 days. The recommended dosage for the treatment of chronic suppurative otitis media with perforated tympanic membranes is 10 drops (0.5 mL, 1.5 mg ofloxacin) instilled into the affected ear twice daily for 14 days. Floxin Otic may interact with other ear drops. Do not use other ear drops unless prescribed by your doctor. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Foxin Otic. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products. Floxin Otic should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. However, it is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

FLOXIN® Otic (ofloxacin otic) solution 0.3% is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible isolates of the designated microorganisms in the specific conditions listed below:

Otitis Externa in adults and pediatric patients, 6 months and older, due to Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.

Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media in patients 12 years and older with perforated tympanic membranes due to Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.

Floxin Otic Patient Information: Side Effects

Stop using ofloxacin otic and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor if you experience:

  • an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
  • skin rash; or
  • ear drainage, discharge, or worsening pain.

Other less serious side effects may also occur such as ear discomfort or itching, and headache. Continue to use the medication and talk to your doctor if these side effects seem excessive or unusual.

Floxin Otic Consumer Information: Uses

Ofloxacin is used to treat outer ear infections (swimmer's ear or ear canal infections) and middle ear infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This medication belongs to a class of drugs called quinolone antibiotics.

This medication treats only bacterial ear infections. It will not work for other types of ear infections. Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
