Humalog Mix 50/50 (50% insulin lispro protamine suspension and 50% insulin lispro injection (rDNA ORIGIN) is a hormone produced in the body used to treat type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes in adults. Humalog Mix 50/50 is usually given together with another long-acting insulin. Common side effects of Humalog Mix 50/50 include:

  • pain,
  • redness,
  • swelling or
  • itching at the injection site.

These side effects usually go away after a few days or weeks. The most common side effect of insulin products such as Humalog Mix 50/50 is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), Symptoms of low blood sugar include headache, hunger, weakness, sweating, tremors, irritability, trouble concentrating, rapid breathing, fast heartbeat, fainting, or seizure. Humalog Mix 50/50 may cause low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalemia). Tell your doctor if you have unlikely but serious side effects of Humalog Mix 50/50 including:

Dosage regimens of Humalog Mix50/50 vary among patients and are determined by the physician familiar with the patient's metabolic needs, eating habits, and other lifestyle variables. Humalog Mix 50/50 may interact with albuterol, clonidine, reserpine, guanethidine, or beta-blockers. Other medicines can increase or decrease the effects of insulin on lowering blood sugar. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using Humalog Mix 50/50. Discuss a plan for managing blood sugars with your doctor before becoming pregnant. Your doctor may switch the type of insulin you use during pregnancy. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Insulin needs may change while breastfeeding. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Humalog 50-50 Consumer Information

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of insulin allergy: itching skin rash over the entire body, wheezing, trouble breathing, fast heart rate, sweating, or feeling like you might pass out.

Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is the most common side effect of insulin. Symptoms include headache, hunger, weakness, sweating, tremors, irritability, trouble concentrating, rapid breathing, fast heartbeat, fainting, or seizure (severe hypoglycemia can be fatal). Carry hard candy or glucose tablets with you in case you have low blood sugar.

Insulin lispro and insulin lispro protamine can also cause hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood). Call your doctor at once if you have symptoms such as confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, increased urination, leg discomfort, muscle weakness or limp feeling.

Tell your doctor if you have itching, swelling, redness, or thickening of the skin where you inject insulin lispro and insulin lispro protamine.

SIDE EFFECTS

Clinical studies comparing Humalog Mix50/50 with human insulin mixtures did not demonstrate a difference in frequency of adverse events between the two treatments. Adverse events commonly associated with human insulin therapy include the following:

Body as a Whole - allergic reactions (see PRECAUTIONS).

Skin and Appendages - injection site reaction, lipodystrophy, pruritus, rash.

Other - hypoglycemia (see WARNINGS and PRECAUTIONS).
