What is the common cold, and what causes it?

The common cold is a self-limited contagious illness that can be caused by a number of different types of viruses. The common cold is medically referred to as a viral upper respiratory tract infection. Symptoms of the common cold may include cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing. More than 200 different types of viruses are known to cause the common cold, with rhinovirus causing approximately 30%-35% of all adult colds. Other commonly implicated viruses include coronavirus, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, and parainfluenza virus. Because so many different viruses can cause a cold and because new cold viruses constantly develop, the body never builds up resistance against all of them. Hycodan (hydrocodone bitartrate and homatropine methylbromide) is used to treat cough. Hydrocodone is a narcotic cough medicine, and homatropine works against the narcotic to prevent an overdose of this medication. Common side effects include nausea due to the use of hydrocodone, which usually goes away after the first few doses. Lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, vision changes, vomiting, and constipation may also occur.

The dose of Hycodan for adults and children 12 years and older is one tablet or 5 mL (1 tsp) of the oral solution every 4 to 6 hours as needed; do not exceed six tablets or 30 mL (6 tsp) in 24 hours. Consult your doctor for pediatric dosing. Hycodan may interact with other medicines that make you sleepy (such as cold or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression, or anxiety). Tell your doctor all medications you use. Hycodan should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. Using this drug near the expected delivery date is not recommended because it may harm a fetus. Infants born to mothers who have been using this medication may have withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, abnormal/persistent crying, vomiting, or diarrhea. Tell your doctor if you notice symptoms in your newborn. This drug may pass into breast milk and could have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Withdrawal symptoms may occur if you suddenly stop using this drug.
