What is sickle cell anemia?

Sickle cell anemia (sickle cell disease) is a disorder of the blood caused by an inherited abnormal hemoglobin (an oxygen-carrying protein within the red blood cells). The abnormal hemoglobin causes distorted (sickled) red blood cells. The sickled red blood cells are fragile and prone to rupture. When the number of red blood cells decreases from rupture (hemolysis), anemia is the result. This condition is referred to as sickle cell anemia. The irregular sickled cells can also block blood vessels causing tissue and organ damage and pain.

Sickle cell anemia is one of the most common inherited blood anemias. The disease primarily affects Africans and African Americans. It is estimated that in the United States, some 50,000 African Americans are afflicted with the most severe form of sickle cell anemia. Overall, current estimates are that one in 1,875 U.S. African American is affected with sickle cell anemia./...

Hydrea Drug Center

Pharmacy Editor: Charles Patrick Davis, MD, PhD

Hydrea (hydroxyurea) is an antineoplastic agent used to treat melanoma, resistant chronic myelocytic leukemia, and recurrent, metastatic, or inoperable carcinoma of the ovary and primary squamous cell (epidermoid) carcinomas of the head and neck. Hydrea is available as a generic named hydroxyurea. Common side effects include nausea, vomiying, diarrhea, skin changes and flu-like symptoms.

Hydrea (hydroxyurea) is available in 500 mg tablets. Dosage depends on the problem being treated; the prescribing doctor will determine dosage. Serious side effects include anemia, myelosuppression and leukemia. Because of the drug's effects on cells, Hydrea should not be used in pregnant women; breast milk may contain the drug so the benefits should be weighed against the possible harm to the infant if the drug is administered to lactating women. The safety and effectiveness of Hydrea in pediatric patients has not been established.

Our Hydrea Drug Center provides a comprehensive view of available drug information as well as related drugs, user reviews, supplements, and diseases, and conditions.
