Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs) »
The class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), as the class name suggests, are drugs that block the action of angiotensin. Specifically, ARBs prevent angiotensin II from binding to the angiotensin II receptor on blood vessels and other tissues.
Angiotensin II is a very potent chemical that causes the muscles surrounding blood vessels to contract, thereby narrowing the blood vessels. Narrowing of blood vessels increases the pressure within the blood vessels and may lead to high blood pressure (hypertension). Reducing the binding and activity of angiotensin II leads to widening (dilation) of blood vessels and reduces blood pressure. By lowering blood pressure against which the heart must pump, the amount of work that the heart must do is reduced. ACE inhibitors also reduce blood pressure in the kidneys, slowing the progression of kidney disease due to high b...

Hyzaar (losartan potassium-hydrochlorothiazide) is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also used to lower the risk of stroke in certain people with heart disease. It is a combination of losartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic (water pill). This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include dizziness or lightheadedness as your body adjusts to the medication.
Dose of Hyzaar is individualized, and ranges from 50/12.5 (losartan/ hydrochlorothiazide) to 100/25 (losartan/ hydrochlorothiazide). Hyzaar may interact with other blood pressure medications, steroids, lithium, celecoxib, cholestyramine or colestipol, insulin or oral diabetes medications, rifampin, barbiturates, other diuretics, aspirin, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), muscle relaxers, or narcotics. Tell your doctor all medications you use. Hyzaar is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the risk for harm to a fetus. It is unknown if losartan passes into breast milk. Hydrochlorothiazide passes into breast milk, but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
