What are beta blockers and how do they work?

Beta blockers, also known as beta-adrenergic blocking agents, are a class of drugs that works by blocking the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and epinephrine from binding to receptors. There are three known types of beta receptors, known as beta₁ (β₁), beta₂ (β₂) and beta₃ (β₃).

β₁-adrenergic receptors are located commonly in the heart and kidneys.
β₂-adrenergic receptors are located mainly in the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, liver, uterus, vascular smooth muscle, and skeletal muscle.
β₃- adrenergic receptors are located in fat cells.

DRUG DESCRIPTION

Inderal® (propranolol hydrochloride) is a synthetic beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent chemically described as 2-Propanol, 1-[(1-methylethyl)amino]-3-(1-naphthalenyloxy)-, hydrochloride,(±)-. Its molecular and structural formulae are:

Propranolol hydrochloride is a stable, white, crystalline solid which is readily soluble in water and ethanol. Its molecular weight is 295.80.

Inderal (propranolol) is available as 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg, and 80 mg tablets for oral administration.

The inactive ingredients contained in Inderal (propranolol) Tablets are: lactose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and stearic acid. In addition, Inderal (propranolol) 10 mg and 80 mg Tablets contain FD&C Yellow No. 6 and D&C Yellow No. 10; Inderal (propranolol) 20 mg Tablets contain FD&C Blue No. 1; Inderal (propranolol) 40 mg Tablets contain FD&C Blue No. 1, FD&C Yellow No. 6, and D&C Yellow No. 10; Inderal (propranolol) 60 mg Tablets contain D&C Red No. 30.

What are the possible side effects of propranolol (Inderal, Inderal LA, InnoPran XL)?

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

fast, slow, or uneven heartbeats;
feeling light-headed, fainting;
feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion;
swelling of your ankles or feet;
fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red...

What are the precautions when taking propranolol (Inderal)?

Before taking propranolol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have had a serious reaction to other beta blockers (e.g., metoprolol); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: certain types of heart rhythm problems (sinus bradycardia, second- or third-degree atrioventricular block), severe heart failure, asthma.
