What are calcium channel blockers (CCBs) and how do they work?

Calcium channel blockers are drugs that block the entry of calcium into the muscle cells of the heart and arteries.

  • The entry of calcium is critical for the conduction of the electrical signal that passes from muscle cell to muscle cell of the heart, and signals the cells to contract.
  • It also is necessary in order for the muscle cells to contract and thereby pump blood.
  • In the arteries, the entry of calcium into muscle cells causes contraction of the cells and thereby dilates (widens) the arteries.
  • Thus, by blocking the entry of calcium, calcium channel blockers reduce electrical conduction within the heart, decrease the force of contraction (work) of the muscle cells, and dilate arteries.

Inderal LA (propranolol hydrochloride) is used to treat tremors, angina (chest pain), hypertension (high blood pressure), heart rhythm disorders, and other heart or circulatory conditions. It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack, and to reduce the severity and frequency of migraine headaches. It is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, or tiredness as your body adjusts to the medication. Nausea/vomiting, stomach pain, vision changes, trouble sleeping, and unusual dreams may also occur.

The usual dosage of Inderal LA ranges from 80 to 160 mg once daily, depending on the condition being treated. Inderal LA may interact with clonidine, digitalis, dobutamine, haloperidol, isoproterenol, blood thinners, antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, aspirin or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), doxazosin, prazosin, terazosin, heart medications, amiodarone, propafenone, quinidine, or ACE inhibitors. During pregnancy, Inderal LA should be used only when prescribed. Infants exposed to this medication during pregnancy may have low birth weight, low blood sugar, or slow breathing/heartbeat. This drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Hypertension

Inderal LA (propranolol) is indicated in the management of hypertension. It may be used alone or used in combination with other antihypertensive agents, particularly a thiazide diuretic. Inderal LA (propranolol) is not indicated in the management of hypertensive emergencies.

Angina Pectoris Due to Coronary Atherosclerosis

Inderal LA (propranolol) is indicated to decrease angina frequency and increase exercise tolerance in patients with angina pectoris.
