Lactulose solution is a type of sugar that is broken down in the large intestine into mild acids that draw water into the colon, which helps soften the stools. Lactulose is used to treat chronic constipation. This drug is also used to treat or prevent complications of liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy). Side effects can include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, bloating, and stomach pain.

Studies in animals have revealed no evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due to lactulose. There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women, so this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk.
