  • The diagnosis of congestive heart failure is based on knowledge of the individual's medical history, a careful physical examination, and selected laboratory tests.

Lasix Drug Center

Medical Editor: Charles Patrick Davis, MD, PhD

Lasix (furosemide) is an anthranilic acid derivative that is used as a strong diuretic. The drug is available as a generic. Lasix can be given orally and by IV. Lasix is used in adults and children to treat excessive fluid accumulation (edema) caused by congestive heart failure, liver failure, renal failure, and nephritic syndrome. Some clinicians use Lasix with antihypertensive drugs to control hypertension. Side effects include increased urination, thirst, muscle cramps, weakness and constipation. Serious side effects include dehydration, fever, electrolyte abnormalities and rapid weight loss.

Lasix is available in tablet (20 to 80 mg) and IV forms. Dosage is determined by the patient's physician and varies according to how much fluid and how fast the fluid should be removed. Patients with poor renal function usually require higher doses; doses in children are weight-based. Patients taking antihypertensive medications should inform their doctors if they start Lasix because the drug may lower blood pressure substantially in some patients. Lactating females should not take Lasix; pregnant females must consult their doctors about its use.

Hypertension

Oral LASIX may be used in adults for the treatment of hypertension alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. Hypertensive patients who cannot be adequately controlled with thiazides will probably also not be adequately controlled with LASI...
