(levocabastine hydrochloride) Ophthalmic Suspension

DRUG DESCRIPTION

LIVOSTIN™ 0.05% (levocabastine hydrochloride ophthalmic suspension) is a selective histamine H1- receptor antagonist for topical ophthalmic use. Each mL contains 0.54 mg levocabastine hydrochloride equivalent to 0.5 mg levocabastine; 0.15 mg benzalkonium chloride; propylene glycol; polysorbate 80; dibasic sodium phosphate, anhydrous; monobasic sodium phosphate, monohydrate; disodium edetate; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose; and purified water. It has a pH of 6.0 to 8.0.

The chemical name for levocabastine hydrochloride is (-) trans-1-[cis-4-Cyano-4-(p-fluorophenyl) cyclohexyl]-3-methyl-4-phenylisonipecotic acid monohydrochloride.

What are the possible side effects of levocabastine ophthalmic (Livostin)?

Serious side effects are not expected with this medication.

Less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use levocabastine ophthalmic and talk to your doctor if you experience

  • burning, stinging, or irritation of the eyes;
  • watering, itching, or redness of the eyes;
  • blurred vision;
  • dry or puffy eyes;
  • headache;
  • nausea;
  • a rash; or
  • fatigue.

What are the precautions when taking levocabastine (Livostin)?

Before using levocabastine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: contact lens use.

Your vision may become temporarily blurred after applying this drug. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
