Virtually any disease as well as most injuries and surgical procedures involve some degree of pain. It's not surprising, then, that pain medications, also known as analgesics, are among the most commonly used drugs in the U.S. Pain can range from minor, acute complaints, such as a muscle sprain, to chronic, severe pain, such as that sometimes experienced by cancer patients. Some drugs used for other conditions also are effective at relieving certain types of pain. These drugs include certain drugs used for depression, epilepsy, and anxiety.
Pain medications can be broadly classified into two categories: prescription and nonprescription. In the latter category are several mild anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, naproxen), as well as acetaminophen. These are mainly meant for use with short-term, acute pain -- menstrual cramps,...

Lortab elixir (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) is a combination pain reliever medication that contains the opioid drug (narcotic) hydrocodone as well as acetaminophen. The elixir form is a solution for oral administration. It is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Side effects can include dizziness, anxiety, constipation, and depression of respiratory function, among others. Like all narcotic pain relievers, this medication may cause dependence and withdrawal reactions, especially if it has been used regularly for a long time or in high doses.
There are no well-controlled studies on the use of this drug in pregnant women. Lortab Elixir should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Babies born to mothers who have been taking opioids regularly prior to delivery will be physically dependent. Acetaminophen is excreted in human milk in small amounts. It is not known whether hydrocodone is excreted in human milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug in breastfeeding women.
