High blood pressure facts

  • High blood pressure (hypertension) is designated as either essential (primary) hypertension or secondary hypertension and is defined as a consistently elevated blood pressure exceeding 140/90 mm Hg.

Micardis Drug Center

Medical Editor: John P. Cunha, DO, FACOEP

Micardis (telmisartan) is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is sometimes given together with other blood pressure medications. It is also used to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, or death from heart problems in people who are at least 55 years old with risk factors for serious heart disorders. Micardis is in a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Common side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, or back pain as your body adjusts to the medication.

Dosage of Micardis is individualized. The usual starting dose is 40 mg once a day. Micardis may interact with diuretics (water pills), or digoxin. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. Micardis is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the risk for harm to a fetus. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Our Micardis (telmisartan) Drug Center provides a comprehensive view of available drug information as well as related drugs, user reviews, supplements, and diseases and conditions articles.
