Microzide (hydrochlorothiazide) is a diuretic (water pill) prescribed for lowering blood pressure (hypertension) and accumulation of fluid (edema). Microzide is available as a generic drug. Common side effects of Microzide include weakness, low blood pressure, light sensitivity, blurred vision, impotence, nausea, abdominal or stomach pain, constipation, electrolyte disturbances, pancreatitis, yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), and rashes.
Microzide dose ranges from 12.5 to 100 mg/day depending on the condition that is being treated. Drug interactions include Lithobid (lithium), Motrin (ibuprofen), Lanoxin (digoxin) and Questran (cholestyramine). There are no adequate studies of Microzide in pregnant women and it is excreted in breast milk.

Microzide in Detail - Patient Information: Side Effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using this medication and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:
- eye pain, vision problems;
- dry mouth, thirst, nausea, vomiting;
- feeling weak, drowsy, restless, or light-headed;
- fast or uneven heartbeat;
- muscle pain or weakness;
- numbness or tingly feeling;
- a red, blistering, peeling skin rash; or
- nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Less serious side effects may include:
- mild stomach pain;
- constipation; or
- blurred vision.

To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.
Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: decrease in vision, eye pain.
This medication may cause a serious loss of body water (dehydration) and salt/minerals. Tell your doctor right away if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: muscle cramps/weakness, slow/fast/irregular heartbeat, unusual decreased urination, unusual dry mouth/thirst.
A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Microzide FDA Prescribing Information: Side Effects
The adverse reactions associated with hydrochlorothiazide have been shown to be dose related. In controlled clinical trials, the adverse events reported with doses of 12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide once daily were comparable to placebo. The following adverse reactions have been reported for doses of hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg and greater and, within each category, are listed in the order of decreasing severity.
Body as a whole: Weakness.
Hypersensitivity: Anaphylactic reactions, necrotizing angiitis (vasculitis and cutaneous vasculitis), respiratory distress including pneumonitis and pulmonary edema, photosensitivity, fever, urticaria, rash, purpura.
Musculoskeletal: Muscle spasm.
Renal: Renal failure, renal dysfunction, interstitial nephritis (see WARNINGS).
Whenever adverse reactions are moderate or severe, thiazide dosage should be reduced or therapy withdrawn.
