What is yeast?

Yeast is a fungus scientifically referred to as Candida. The specific type of fungus most commonly responsible for vaginitis is Candida albicans. Yeast is commonly present on normal human skin and in areas of moisture, such as the mouth and vagina. In fact, it is estimated that between 20%-50% of healthy women normally carry yeast in the vaginal area.

Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina. Vaginitis is very common and is reported by as many as 75% of women at some point in their lives. Vaginitis can be caused by a number of infections, including bacteria (such as Gardnerella and gonorrhea), protozoans (such as trichomonas), and yeast (Candida). Vaginal yeast infection, which is the most common form of vaginitis, is often referred to as vaginal Candidiasis.

What is nystatin topical (Nystatin Cream)?

Nystatin topical is an antifungal medication. Nystatin topical prevents fungus from growing on your skin.

Nystatin topical is used to treat skin infections caused by yeast.

Nystatin topical may also be used for other purposes not those listed in this medication guide.

What are the possible side effects of nystatin topical (Nystatin Cream)?

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop nystatin topical and call your doctor at once if you have severe itching, redness, peeling, dryness, blistering, or irritation of your treated skin.

Less serious side effects may include mild skin itching, redness, or irritation.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

What is the most important information I should know about nystatin topical (Nystatin Cream)?

Avoid getting this medication in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If it does get into these areas, rinse thoroughly with water.

Do not cover treated skin areas with bandages or dressings that do not allow air circulation unless your doctor has told you to. You may use a light gauze dressing to keep the medication from getting on your clothes or bed sheets.

Avoid wearing tight-fitting, synthetic clothing (such as nylon) that doesn't allow air circulation. Wear clothing made of loose cotton and other natural fibers until your infection is healed.

Use this medication for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse within 7 days of using nystatin topical.
