How is diabetes treated?

The major goal in treating diabetes is to minimize any elevation of blood sugar (glucose) without causing abnormally low levels of blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin, exercise, and a diabetic diet. Type 2 diabetes is treated first with weight reduction, a diabetic diet, and exercise. When these measures fail to control the elevated blood sugars, oral medications are used. If oral medications are still insufficient, treatment with insulin is considered.

Adherence to a diabetic diet is an important aspect of controlling elevated blood sugar in patients with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has provided guidelines for a diabetic diet. Onglyza (saxagliptin) is used either alone or with other medications, and with a proper diet and exercise program, to control high blood sugar. It is used in people with type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. Common side effects include runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, headache, or stomach pain.

The recommended dose of Onglyza is 2.5 mg or 5 mg once daily taken regardless of meals. Onglyza may interact with tazanavir, clarithromycin, indinavir, itraconazole, nefazodone, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir, and telithromycin. Low blood sugar may occur if this drug is prescribed with other anti-diabetes medications. During pregnancy, Onglyza should be used only when prescribed. Pregnancy may cause or worsen diabetes. Your doctor may change your diabetes treatment during your pregnancy. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Important Limitations of Use

ONGLYZA should not be used for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis, as it would not be effective in these settings.
