Ortho Tricyclen (norgestimate/ethinyl estradiol) is a combination hormonal preparation classified as oral contraceptives (birth control pills). Ortho Tricyclen is available as a generic drug and prescribed for preventing pregnancy. Common side effects include nausea, headache, breast tenderness, weight gain and mood changes.
Ortho Tricyclen is dosed at 1 tablet daily beginning on a specified day of the week according to the package insert with seven days off for the 21-day unit dispenser and no interruption for the 28-day. Drug interactions include cyclosporine, dantrolene (Dantrium), warfarin (Coumadin), some antibiotics and anti-seizure medications (carbamazepine [Tegretol] and phenytoin [(Dilantin]), rifampin (Rifadin). Ortho Tricyclen use during pregnancy causes adverse effects in the new born and is found in breast milk.

ORTHO-CYCLEN® and ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN® Tablets are indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use oral contraceptives as a method of contraception.
ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN is indicated for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in females at least 15 years of age, who have no known contraindications to oral contraceptive therapy and have achieved menarche. ORTHO TRI-CYCLEN should be used for the treatment of acne only if the patient desires an oral contraceptive for birth control.
