Patanol (olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) 0.1 % is an antihistamine used to treat ocular (eye) symptoms of allergic conditions, such as inflammation, itching, watering, and burning. Common side effects of Patanol include:

  • headache,
  • blurred vision,
  • burning/stinging/redness/dryness/ irritation/itching of the eye,
  • eyelid swelling,
  • a feeling as if something is in your eye,
  • puffy eyelids,
  • stuffy or runny nose,
  • cough,
  • sore throat,
  • weakness,
  • back pain, or
  • unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth.

A serious allergic reaction to Patanol is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if you have symptoms of a serious allergic reaction including rash, itching or swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), dizziness, or trouble breathing.

The recommended dose of Patanol is one drop in each affected eye two times per day at an interval of 6 to 8 hours. There may be other drugs that can interact with Patanol. Tell your doctor about all your prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor. Patanol should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using olopatadine ophthalmic and call your doctor at once if you have severe redness, swelling, burning, stinging, drainage, crusting, or other irritation when using the eye drops.

Less serious side effects may include:

  • mild burning, stinging, irritation, itching, redness, or dryness of the eyes;
  • blurred vision;
  • feeling that something is in your eye;
  • puffy eyelids;
  • stuffy or runny nose, cough, sore throat;
  • weakness;
  • back pain;
  • headache; or
  • unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth.

SIDE EFFECTS

Headaches have been reported at an incidence of 7%. The following adverse experiences have been reported in less than 5% of patients: Asthenia, blurred vision, burning or stinging, cold syndrome, dry eye, foreign body sensation, hyperemia, hypersensitivity, keratitis, lid edema, nausea, pharyngitis, pruritis, rhinitis, sinusitis, and taste perversion. Some of these events were similar to the underlying disease being studied.
