Phenergan (promethazine HCI) is an antihistamine used to treat nausea and vomiting related to certain conditions (e.g., motion sickness, before/after surgery). It is also used to treat allergic symptoms such as rash, itching, and runny nose. Phenergan is available as a generic drug, and is usually taken four times daily as needed or as directed by your doctor. The most common side effects of Phenergan are drowsiness, dizziness, or anxiety.

Drug interactions and warnings include: Concomitant use of other agents with anticholinergic properties should be undertaken with caution. Phenergan Tablets and Suppositories should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether Phenergan is excreted in human milk. Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from Phenergan Tablets and Suppositories, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.

Phenergan (promethazine) , either orally or by suppository, is useful for:

Perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Vasomotor rhinitis.

Allergic conjunctivitis due to inhalant allergens and foods.

Mild, uncomplicated allergic skin manifestations of urticaria and angioedema.

Amelioration of allergic reactions to blood or plasma.

Dermographism.

Anaphylactic reactions, as adjunctive therapy to epinephrine and other standard measures, after the acute manifestations have been controlled.
