What is menopause?

Menopause is defined as the state of an absence of menstrual periods for 12 months. The menopausal transition starts with varying menstrual cycle length and ends with the final menstrual period. Perimenopause means "the time around menopause" and is often used to refer to the menopausal transitional period. It is not officially a medical term, but is sometimes used to explain certain aspects of the menopause transition in lay terms. Postmenopause is the entire period of time that comes after the last menstrual period.

Premarin (conjugated estrogens) is used to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, and vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation. It is also used to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, and replace of estrogen in women with ovarian failure or other conditions that cause a lack of natural estrogen in the body. Conjugated estrogens are sometimes used as part of cancer treatment in women and men. Estrogen is a female hormone. Common side effects include stomach upset, nausea/vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness, headache, or weight changes.

Women should be started at 0.3 mg Premarin daily. Dosage adjustment may be made based on patient response. Dose may vary depending on the condition being treated. Premarin may interact with blood thinners, thyroid medications, insulin or oral diabetes medicine, rifampin, ketoconazole or itraconazole, seizure medicines, barbiturates, or antidepressants. Tell your doctor all medications you use. Premarin must not be used during pregnancy. This medication passes into breast milk. It may reduce the quality and amount of breast milk produced. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

PREMARIN therapy is indicated in the:

  1. Treatment of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms due to menopause.
  2. Treatment of moderate to severe symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy due to menopause. When prescribing solely for the treatment of symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy, topical vaginal products should be considered.
  3. Treatment of hypoestrogenism due to hypogonadism, castration or primary ovarian failure.
