What is atrial fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common, abnormal rhythm of the heart.

The heart contracts (beats) and pumps blood with a regular rhythm, for example, at a rate of 60 beats per minute there is a beat every second. The heart may beat faster or slower with a shorter or longer interval between beats, but at any one rate the interval between beats is constant. This regular rhythm occurs as a result of regular electrical discharges (currents) that travel through the heart and cause the muscle of the heart to contract. In atrial fibrillation, the electrical discharges are irregular and rapid and, as a result, the heart beats irregularly and, usually, rapidly.

Atrial fibrillation is common; half a million new cases are diagnosed yearly in the U.S., and billions of dollars are spent annually on its diagnosis and treatment.

What happens if I miss a dose (Procan Sr)?

Since procainamide injection is given as needed by a healthcare professional, it is not likely that you will miss a dose.

What happens if I overdose (Procan Sr)?

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.

Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, tremors, weak or shallow breathing, and fainting.

What should I avoid while receiving procainamide injection (Procan Sr)?

Avoid being near people who have colds, the flu, or other contagious illnesses. Contact your doctor at once if you develop signs of infection.

Procainamide can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

What other drugs will affect procainamide injection (Procan Sr)?

Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, especially:

cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB);
digoxin (digitalis, Lanoxin); or
heart rhythm medications such as amiodarone (Cordarone), quinidine (Quinaglute, Quinidex, Quin-Release), disopyramide (Norpace), flecaininde (Tambocor), mexiletine (Mexitil), morizicine (Ethmozine), propafenone, (Rythmol), and others.
