What are congenital heart defects?

Congenital (kon-JEN-i-tal) heart defects are problems with the heart's structure that are present at birth. These defects can involve the interior walls of the heart, valves inside the heart, or the arteries and veins that carry blood to the heart or out to the body. Congenital heart defects change the normal flow of blood through the heart.

There are many different types of congenital heart defects. They range from simple defects with no symptoms to complex defects with severe, life-threatening symptoms.

Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defect, affecting 8 of every 1,000 newborns. Each year, more than 35,000 babies in the United States are born with congenital heart defects. Most of these defects are simple conditions that are easily fixed or need no treatment.

What happens if I miss a dose (Prostin VR Pediatric)?

Since alprostadil is used as needed, you will not be on a dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose (Prostin VR Pediatric)?

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medication. Overdose symptoms may include feeling light-headed, fainting, or having a painful or prolonged erection lasting 4 hours or longer.

What should I avoid while using alprostadil (Prostin VR Pediatric)?

Alprostadil can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

What other drugs will affect alprostadil (Prostin VR Pediatric)?

Before using alprostadil, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs:

nitroglycerin;
hydralazine (BiDil); or
a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin), heparin, dalteparin (Fragmin), danaparoid (Orgaran), or enoxaparin (Lovenox).
