RIFATER (rifampin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide) is indicated in the initial phase of the short-course treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. During this phase, which should last 2 months, RIFATER (rifampin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide) should be administered on a daily, continuous basis (See DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION).

Following the initial phase and treatment with RIFATER (rifampin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide) , treatment should be continued with rifampin and isoniazid (eg, RIFAMATE) for at least 4 months. Treatment should be continued for a longer period of time if the ...

Rifater Patient Information: Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and rifampin can cause severe liver symptoms. Stop taking this medication and call your doctor at once if you have any of these liver symptoms:

  • low fever;
  • nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite;
  • dark urine, clay-colored stools; or
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Rifater Consumer Information: Uses

This product is used to treat tuberculosis (TB) of the lungs. It contains 3 medications: rifampin, isoniazid, and pyrazinamide. These medications are antibiotics. Rifampin is known as a rifamycin antibiotic. This product works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
