What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most well-recognized childhood developmental problems. This condition is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. It is now known that these symptoms continue into adulthood for about 60% of children with ADHD. That translates into 4% of the US adult population, or 8 million adults. However, few adults are identified or treated for adult ADHD.

Ritalin LA (methylphenidate hydrochloride) is used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and narcolepsy. It is a central nervous system stimulant. This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include headache, stomach pain, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, irritability, nervousness, blurred vision, dry mouth, constipation or (rarely) drowsiness.

The recommended starting dose of Ritalin LA is 20 mg once daily. Dosage may be adjusted in weekly 10 mg increments to a maximum of 60 mg/day taken once daily in the morning, depending on tolerability and effectiveness. Ritalin LA may interact with MAO inhibitors, blood thinners, clonidine, dobutamine, epinephrine, isoproterenol, phenylbutazonie, cold/allergy medicine containing phenylephrine, potassium citrate, sodium acetate, sodium bicarbonate, citric acid (Vitamin C), potassium citrate, sodium citrate, medications to treat high or low blood pressure, stimulants, diet pills, seizure medicine, or antidepressants. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Ritalin LA should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Do not stop taking Ritalin LA suddenly or you may have withdrawal symptoms.

Ritalin LA Consumer Information: Uses

Methylphenidate is used to treat attention disorders (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD) as part of a total treatment plan including psychological, educational and social measures. When this medication is used to treat ADHD, patients may find they have increased attention, decreased impulsiveness, and decreased hyperactivity (see also Notes section). This medication is a mild stimulant that works by affecting the levels of chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the nervous system.

This medication should not be used to treat simple fatigue symptoms.
