Diarrhea facts

Diarrhea is an increase in the frequency of bowel movements, an increase in the looseness of stool or both.
Diarrhea is caused by increased secretion of fluid into the intestine, reduced absorption of fluid from the intestine or rapid passage of stool through the intestine.
Diarrhea can be defined absolutely or relatively. Absolute diarrhea is defined as more than five bowel movements a day or liquid stools. Relative diarrhea is defined as an increase in the number of bowel movements per day or an increase in the looseness of stools compared with an individual's usual bowel habit.
Diarrhea may be either acute or chronic, and each has different causes and treatments.
Complications of diarrhea include dehydration, electrolytes (mineral) abnormalities, and irritation of the anus.

Prescribing Information

For Patients

Sandostatin LAR Depot (octreotide acetate) is used to treat acromegaly. It is also used to reduce flushing episodes and watery diarrhea caused by cancerous tumors (carcinoid syndrome) or tumors called vasoactive intestinal peptide tumors (VIP adenomas). It is in a class of medications called octapeptides. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, loose/oily stools, constipation, stomach upset, gas, bloating, dizziness, or headache. Pain and irritation at the injection site may also occur.

Dosing of Sandostatin depends on the condition being treated and the response of the patient. Sandostatin may interact with bromocriptine, cyclosporine, diuretics (water pills), diabetes medication, or medicine for heart disease or high blood pressure. Sandostatin may restore the normal ability to become pregnant in females with acromegaly who have infertility. Females of childbearing age should discuss reliable forms of birth control with the doctor. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when prescribed. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Sandostatin LAR Depot 10 mg, 20 mg and 30 mg is indicated in patients in whom initial treatment with Sandostatin Injection has been shown to be effective and tolerated.

Acromegaly

Long-term maintenance therapy in acromegalic patients who have had an inadequate response to surgery and/or radiotherapy, or for whom surgery and/or radiotherapy is not an option. Sandostatin LAR Consumer Information: Uses

This medication is a long-acting form of octreotide. Octreotide is used to treat severe watery diarrhea and sudden reddening of the face and neck caused by certain types of tumors (e.g., carcinoid tumors, vasoactive intestinal peptide tumors) that are found usually in the intestines and pancreas. The symptoms occur when these tumors make too much of certain natural substances (hormones). This medication works by blocking the production of these hormones. By decreasing watery diarrhea, octreotide helps to reduce the loss of body fluids and minerals.
