How is Onglyza (saxagliptin) prescribed?

  • The recommended dose of Onglyza (saxagliptin) is 2.5 mg or 5 mg once daily with or without meals.
  • Kidney function should be assessed before starting Onglyza.

What are the possible complications and drug interactions with Onglyza (saxagliptin)?

The recommended dose is 2.5 mg once daily for patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or end-stage renal disease (ESRD), conditions in which reduced elimination of Onglyza (saxagliptin) can lead to increased blood levels of Onglyza (saxagliptin).

The dose of Onglyza (saxagliptin) also is limited to 2.5 mg when it is administered with drugs that inhibit the breakdown of Onglyza (saxagliptin) and lead to increased blood levels of the drug such as Nizoral, Xolegel, Extina (ketoconazole), Reyataz
(atazanavir), Biaxin (clarithromycin), Crixivan (indinavir), Sporanox (itraconazole), Serzone (nefazodone), Viracept (nelfinavir), Norvir (ritonavir), and Invirase (saquinavir).
