What are the different types of rheumatoid arthritis medicines?
Rheumatoid arthritis responds most effectively to treatment when it is initiated early. It is then easier to treat and easier to respond to treatments. Medications used to treat rheumatoid arthritis range from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as meloxicam [Mobic], diclofenac [Voltaren], and celecoxib [Celebrex]) and cortisone drugs (such as prednisone [Deltasone]) to disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), including antimalarials (such as hydroxychloroquine [Plaquenil]), methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall), sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), azathioprine (Imuran), leflunomide (Arava), and cyclosporine (Sandimmune).
Newer biologic treatments include etanercept (Enbrel), infliximab (Remicade), adalimumab (Humira), rituximab (Rituxan), golimumab (Simponi), certolizumab (Cimzia), abatacept (Orencia), tocilizumab (Actemra), and tofacitinib (Xeljanz).
