Definition of Asystole

Asystole: A dire form of cardiac arrest in which the heart stops beating -- there is no systole -- and there is no electrical activity in the heart. The heart is at a total standstill. In the past the asystolic heart usually could not be restarted. However, in 2004 people with asystole were reported to be three times as likely to survive if they are given an a injection of a hormone called vasopressin than if they receive adrenaline alone.
